The Medical Affairs Manager combined MSL role is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and ambitious MSL.  The role will combine field territory excellence, along with supervision of a small field MSL team.  The optimal candidate will have worked with headquarters personnel and can ensure that the core medical affairs strategies and tactics are understood and executed with excellence. The MAM-MSL will be part of a small highly experienced MSL team.  This role will require proactivity in enabling and helping coordinate US Medical Affairs tactics while working collaboratively with a EU headquartered company with US presence.


The MAM-MSL is an experienced, scientific, field-based professional who must be able to demonstrate experience with people leadership and management skills.  This will include financial and operational oversight of the MSL team while overseeing the implementation and support for headquarters-based Medical Affairs tactics. It is a challenging role that will require strategic focus, commitment, an ability to multitask and a person who can self-start without extensive managerial oversight.

Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Partner with medical leadership to develop and deploy field HCP engagement strategies, including creation of the MSL team tactical plan(s) while adherence to policy and industry standards
  • Advise on and participate in the development of a customer-centric territory evaluation and associated engagement plans. Ensure support for field tactic best practice sharing to drive impact-focused outcomes that advance Medical Affair’s goals and objectives.
  • Support headquarters (HQ) medical affairs colleagues in directing activity planning based on strategic goals and objectives; Help develop responses to scientific inquiries from Health Care Providers (HCPs)/investigators/health care systems/academic medical centers
  • Support the  Medical Lead (Gothenberg-based) as needed on publication planning, strategic medical communications framework activities and research initiatives.  Support activities such as medical conference attendance/coverage, advisory boards, and formulary presentations (as requested).
  • Leverage knowledge of standards of care and company/investigator sponsored clinical trials and competitor landscape to facilitate external-internal research communications
  • Manage a US field territory and engage with relevant external stakeholders including HCPs, KOLs and other decision makers. Develop and execute a strategic territory engagement plan for assigned territory.
  • Support activities such as medical conference presence, advisory boards, and formulary presentations as and if required.
  • Leverage knowledge of standards of care and company/investigator sponsored clinical trials and competitor landscape to facilitate external-internal research communication
  • Establish, cultivate, and maintain scientific relationships with stakeholders while developing a strong understanding of clinical practice as it relates to areas of interest.
  • Identify and act upon the medical information needs and research interests of stakeholders
  • Serve as a primary resource to provide support for addressing unsolicited medical questions and other scientific exchange matters
  • Identify, gather, and document field generated scientific insights to inform, develop and refine executable and innovative Medical Affairs strategies
  • Collaborate with MSLs, appropriate Commercial colleagues, and the broader organization to provide scientific expertise and share medical insights in support of internal and external activities
  • Lead, manage and be a strong contributor to a small team of MSLs ensuring that the field team executes the MSL plan of action.  Oversee MSLs’ strategic and tactical plans effectively and compliantly while following all Syneos Health and client corporate policies and procedures
  • Coordinate all team meetings and provide oversight of training, activities, scientific and related communications for the field based MSLs.  Assist in the professional development of the team by being a source of leadership, information and guidance.
  • Conduct Field Visits
  • Conduct MSL assessments


Job Requirements

Along with your ability to remain at the forefront of your field, you must possess:

  • Doctorate level scientific degree is required, PhD, PharmD or MD required
  • 5+ years of experience as an MSL in Oncology
  • Colorectal/GI oncology experience preferred
  • Prior experience as a manager of field based MSLs
  • Pharmaceutical launch experience and working closely with headquarters’ medical affairs teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills and highly flexible attitude to taking on tasks and responding to the needs of a small client.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness to work cross-functionally as well as independently 
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills
  • Ability to develop and execute plans against objectives in an independent environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent presentation / platform skills.
  • Excellent computer skills i.e. Microsoft Office, Access and Excel and expert ability to be able to interpret a contact management system
  • Ability to travel and possess a valid driver's license to drive to assigned healthcare accounts, unless otherwise specified
