Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the SVP, Medical Director are to lead Medical strategy across multiple accounts, oversee content development in alignment with Medical and Brand strategy, and to capitalize on new business opportunities. Although able to perform all the aspects required of Medical Strategy, the SVP Medical Director is expected to be skilled at delegating workflow and developing the Medical Strategy team.  As a client-facing lead, the SVP, Medical Director fosters relationships to secure agency business and ensure client satisfaction. From a strategic perspective, the SVP, Medical Director is expected to have comprehensive medical knowledge and understanding of both the therapeutic category (inclusive of the treatment paradigm and competitive landscape) and the compound (inclusive of brand data and brand positioning within competitive landscape). Being able to work independently, multi-task across accounts, lead internally, drive strategic collaboration, and be seen, as a valued internal and external partner are critical to the SVP, Medical Director role.

The SVP, Medical Director will be involved in new business initiatives and is expected to identify and capitalize on organic growth opportunities with existing clients as well as participate in RPIs/RFPs. This person is expected have business insight and to develop and apply this skillset in the best interests of the agency and our clients.

This is a highly visible position that involves a great deal of client contact as well as interaction with our internal staff. Please present a strong, progressive history of success within either a pharmaceutical advertising agency or a promotional medical-education company.

As part of the Syneos Health network, GSW actively collaborates with sister agencies and disciplines, including public relations and medical communications. The SVP, Medical Director plays a key role in driving collaboration across these disciplines and engages frequently in cross-functional business development and assignments. 

Key Experience and Responsibilities

  • Proven strategic and medical thinking and the ability to read and distill data
  • Proven leadership across and management of multiple accounts
  • Ability to multi-task and collaborate internally and externally
  • Ability to grow and develop key client and internal relationships
  • Deep new business experience, from organic growth to RFI/RFP planning, development, and execution
  • Experience across both promotional and non-promotional medical communication activities
  • Workshop development and facilitation experience
  • Assist in the development of overall strategy for assigned therapeutic areas
  • Review of materials and content developed for relevance, accuracy, and strategic direction
  • Train and mentor Medical staff on industry-, company-, and group-relevant standards
    • Set clear expectations and milestones for employee growth and spearhead routine performance reviews
    • Identify, foster, and monitor necessary skills development for staff
    • Assign and allocate workload across reports
  • Experience in acting as the liaison between the agency and our clients’ internal medical teams

Job Requirements

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Advanced degree required (PhD, PharmD, MS).
  • MUST have 10+ years’ experience with a medical communications agency in a scientific/medical role (prefer experience in pharmaceutical advertising agency)
  • 2-3 years of leadership/management experience
  • Broad therapeutic category experience with Oncology experience highly preferred
  • Highly strategic with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven track record of developing on strategy and creative scientific solutions for pharmaceutical clients.
  • Strong experience in developing, reviewing, and managing scientific content produced within a pharmaceutical advertising agency.
  • Experience in the management and mentorship of medical staff (medical writers, associate scientific directors, etc.) required for more senior roles.
  • Experience in taking the lead role in representing medical/scientific services on new business pitches.
  • Ability to interact effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent organization skills and precise attention to detail.
  • Strong client facing experience.

The SVP Medical Director has overall accountability for all medical/scientific aspects of content created in support of their client’s products and activities. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing effective strategies for their clients and creating tactics designed to help their clients achieve their goals.
